The Arts at Grace Sunday afternoon concert series offers its sixth and final concert of the 2008-2009 season on Sunday, May 24 at 3 p.m. at Grace Episcopal Church, 13 Court Street in Cortland. Just in time for Memorial Day, The JazzHappensBand will be performing numbers that are pure Americana. There is no charge for the event.

The JazzHappensBand is a traditional Dixieland jazz band operating out of Cortland. Their repertoire includes Dixie, blues, and quick stepping jazz. Band leader Jeff Dovi says, “I like to keep the music as true to a Dixie beat as possible, but we do throw in some rhythm and blues and some specialty numbers for the entertainment value they offer. I really think that Dixieland music is the happiest, toe-tapping and good-times music going; tunes that you can go home whistling!” What better way to get into the spirit of the first holiday of the summer of 2009?

Formed in 2005, JazzHappensBand was started because its members thoroughly enjoy playing their music together. Only Nick Pauldine (clarinet) and Steve Wilson (keyboard) make their livings as musicians. Band leader Jeff Dovi (trumpet) is a carpenter. Mike Poole (trombone) is a student. David Alexander (drums) is a lawyer. Jim Overhiser (tuba) teaches high school physics while Robbert van Renesse (banjo) is a researcher. Admission to all Arts at Grace events is free, but voluntary donations can be made at the door. Audiences are invited to meet and talk with the performers at informal, post-program receptions. For further information, call the church at (607) 753-3073.
